Our History
Children, Incorporated was founded by Jeanne Clarke Wood in 1964. Compassion
for underprivileged children was bred in Mrs. Wood, as her parents, Dr. and Mrs. J. Calvitt Clarke,
were noted philanthropists as well.
On a visit in 1964, Mrs. Wood witnessed
the horrible circumstances of poverty in Guatemala. Upon her return to Richmond, VA, Mrs. Wood
immediately began to seek help for the 95 children she met. She wrote accounts of the miserable
living conditions the children had to endure. She opened an office in her own home, wrote letters to her personal contacts,
and put out magazine ads.
In the spring of 1971, Mrs. Wood made a second trip
to Guatemala. During the lapse of time between her two visits there - from 1964 to 1971 - the
program had flourished. From its humble beginnings (fewer than 100 children in three small projects),
Children, Incorporated has grown to serve over 20,000 children in 300 projects, covering 24 countries around the world.
Our Founder
"Our organization is based on long-range assistance
to children in need here in the United States and around the world, where we help the children through already established orphanages,
schools, and welfare centers."
"I hope to find sponsors for the thousands of youngsters on our waiting list. Children,
Incorporated believes that its sponsorship plan facilitates understanding, friendship and goodwill
between the peoples of the world and that the children assisted become ambassadors of peace."
